Under fire for telecasting live Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s Vijay Dashmi speech in Nagpur on Friday morning, Doordarshan defended its decision on the grounds that it was news and was covered like any other news event.

N. Mahalingam, Chairman of the Coimbatore-based Sakthi Group of Companies, passed away in Chennai on Thursday. He was 91. According to sources, Mr. Mahalingam had been organising the Gandhi Vallalar Vizha for the last 49 years. He was at the event in Chennai on Thursday evening when he collapsed. He was rushed to a private hospital but declared dead.


The Chief Executive of e-commerce major Amazon, Jeffrey P Bezos, called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.


The International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) said that corporate governance failures have been cited as contributors to the financial crisis and more recently to the Libor scandals.  “Risks related to corporate governance may build up in the financial system, signalling the need for regulators to better understand how corporate incentives and internal structures contribute to generating those risks,” said IOSCO in its report, Securities Markets Risk Outlook 2014-15. This is the second edition of the annual IOSCO’s Securities Markets Risk Outlook series.


Falling for the fourth week in a row, India’s foreign exchange reserves went down by $1.415 billion to $314.181 billion in the week ended September 26, 2014, on account of a hefty drop in non-U.S. currency assets. In the previous week, the reserves had fallen by $101.3 million to $ 315.596 billion. During the reporting week, foreign currency assets (FCAs), a major constituent of overall reserves, dropped by $1.391 billion to $287.392 billion, RBI data showed. 


Indian pugilists ended their campaign at the 17th Asian Games with five medals as Vikas Krishan and Satish Kumar settled for bronze medals after losing their semifinal bouts.
India’s performance graph deteriorated from the last edition in Guangzhou, where it won nine medals including two golds, three silvers and four bronzes.
This time it was gold from Mary Kom and the bronze from Sarita Devi, Pooja Rani, Vikas and Satish.
Vikas, a gold medallist at Guangzhou, lost to world champion Zhanibek Alimkhanuly of Kazakhstan 2-1 in the middleweight category. Satish was no match for the 6ft 9 inch Kazakh Ivan Dychko, who won with a clear 3-0 verdict in all the rounds



Aditya Kaushik’s century and Subodh Bhatti’s five-wicket haul helped Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) beat Bengal by two runs in the J.P. Atray memorial cricket tournament at the Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium here on Friday.
