Veteran journalist M.V. Kamath passed away after a brief illness here on Thursday. He was 93. “He died of cardiac arrest at 7.30 a.m.,” said M. Dayananda, Medical Superintendent and COO of Kasturba Hospital.


In a unique move, the Karnataka government has decided to observe every Tuesday as ‘Super Tuesday’ to guarantee availability of medical treatment to mentally challenged persons in taluk hospitals, community health centres and primary health centres (PHCs) across the State.


The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala to appear in person before it on Friday, while taking note of a series of political rallies being addressed by him in the run-up to the Assembly elections. The order was passed on the CBI's plea for cancellation of interim bail granted to Mr. Chautala after his conviction in a corruption case.


The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will now probe the Bengal blast case. The Union Home Ministry has ordered to register a case under NIA Act, a senior Home Ministry official has confirmed on Thursday. The West Bengal Government will now “be legally bound” to hand over evidences and documents related to last week’s Bardhaman blast to the NIA officials, who are expected to arrive in the city shortly. The blast had killed two persons in a colony in Bardhaman district on October 2. According to the police, the blast has brought to light “a terror network”, hitherto unknown in West Bengal.


Visiting U.S. Senators Timothy Kaine and Angus King raised some eyebrows by suggesting in New Delhi that the United Nations could play a bigger role in the current tensions between India and Pakistan.


New evidence has raised troubling questions about India’s 25-year strategy of pushing people to use toilets as a way to improve health. In a paper published on Friday morning in the medical journal Lancet , researchers led by Thomas Clasen of the U.S.-based Emory University found that increased toilet coverage did not lead to any significant improvements in the occurrence of child diarrhoea, prevalence of parasitic worm infections, child stunting or child mortality. For their study, Dr. Clasen and his team looked at 50 villages in Odisha’s Puri district between May 2010 and December 2013, where the then Total Sanitation Campaign to build toilets was in effect, and 50 otherwise similar villages where the campaign had not yet started.

A Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C26, will lift off from the space centre at Sriharikota on October 16 at 1.32 a.m. to put a navigation satellite, Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, IRNSS-1C, into orbit.


Astronomers have discovered a black hole that is consuming gas from a nearby star 10 times faster than previously thought possible. The black hole known as P13 lies on the outskirts of the galaxy NGC7793 about 12 million light years away from earth and is ingesting a weight equivalent to 100 billion hot dogs every minute. Scientists first noticed P13 because it was a lot more luminous than other black holes, but it was initially assumed that it was simply bigger. The discovery was published in the journal Nature



Tech giant AMD on Thursday said it had elevated its Chief Operating Officer Lisa Su to the post of CEO, making her the first woman to head the global chip maker. She succeeds Rory Read, who has stepped down as President and CEO, as part of a transition plan. “Leadership succession planning has been a joint effort between Mr. Rory and the board, and we felt that Ms. Lisa’s expertise and proven leadership in the industry make this an ideal time for her to lead the company,” AMD Chairman Bruce Claflin told.
